Ricci Rucker - Controller One Turntable

We finally get to see some footage of Rucker using his infamous turntable, which although not as popular, definitely dwarfs the QFO in comparision.
The most impressive aspect to the turntable is probably the ability to comunicate with midi. In this video you can see the turntable physically speeding up and slowing down in response to midi data. Check all the Rucker's Controller One vids here.
Dope work Ricci.

Here's an MP3 of the record he's using... Utility Phonograph Record 4 - Side B - MP3

Round-up!

Alright, so I'm finally back in Miami after my trips to Chicago and NYC.

This year's Pitchfork Festival was real dope. Took some time to know the fact that I saw so many acts in two days finally sink in. They killed it.

Clipse, Junior Boys, The Field, Fujiya & Miyagi, De La Soul, Professor Murder, Deerhunter, GZA, Cadence Weapon, The Cool Kids, Grizzly Bear were definitely worth my time.

NYC was NYC. Much love for the NormRex crew. As my boy Merge said, "it's the calm before the storm." Totally feeling that. We'll be on the map soon.

If you checked out CA$$ETTE in LA, thanks! Many more to come.

Oh, I stumbled upon this:

Trilogyy - Apocalypse Rock MP3 ALT

So Kris Menace (co-owner of Vulture, same label Braxe is in), Serge Santiágo, and Tom Neville came together and created the pseudonym Trilogyy (yes, there's an extra y).

An obvious sample from one of my favorites, Kano, but I'll definitely be playing this jam out.

Here's the original:

AUG 1st - The Walls Belong To Us - NYC

Alain Ket Maridueña is a publisher, writer, Hip Hop historian, activist and graffiti artist from New York City. He was arrested this past March for over a dozen alleged "graffiti crimes". He is looking at about 10 years of prison time if found guilty. He was charged in New York City courts (Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan) on counts of felony criminal mischief, possession of graffiti tools, and X., all relating to a search performed on his home in New York City in late 2006.

Ket, who has been a part of the NYC graffiti movement since the late '80s, and who founded both Stress and Complex magazines, has no previous criminal record.

The Hip-Hop Theatre Festival, Mass Appeal magazine, and the Powerhouse Arena have planned an event to raise money for his legal defense fund with "The Walls Belong to Us", a silent auction slated for August 1st.

The benefit will include canvases, sculptures, prints and silk screens from Martha Cooper, Futura 2000, and several other artists. A large portion of the works are being donated exclusively for this auction. An open bar, cocktails, music, and art raffles complete the event.

Support.

DJ ALADDIN

To this day, DJs still debate whether it was Steve D or Aladdin who invented Beat Juggling.

DJ Aladdin - Herman Kelly Routine - Video
DJ Aladdin - 89 DMC US Finals - Video

Regardless, DJ Aladdin was doing tricks in the late 80's most DJs won't be able to pull off in the 2010's. Productionwise, Aladdin favored the SP-1200. He played a huge part in making the sample-based east coast sound popular on the west coast. My favorite part of his whole career has to be his phono/line switch transforms. classic.

Low Profile - Aladdin's on a Rampage MP3 (You can hear the SP's famous ring mod on the kick which was tuned down)

Theo Jansen

Theo Jansen (1948) studied physics at the University of Delft (The Netherlands) from 1968-1975. He left University to be - come an artist. He painted for the first seven years. In 1980 he built a flying saucer (15 ft flashing lights, beep sounds) that flew over Delft and set the town in commotion. Then he built a light sensitive spray-gun which paints an object on a surface. Since 1986 Theo Jansen has been writing a column for the Volkskrant (national newspaper). Since 1990 he has been working on a new creation: skeletons made of electric-conduits which walk on windpower. These animals have evolved into several generations over the last twelve years. Eventually he wants to put the animaIs out in herds, on the beaches, where they live their own lives.

New Mum

They have definitely taken steps toward the sweeping sounds of Sigur Ros.
Save "Moon Pulls" for a rainy day.
"Marmalade Fires" is quite serene.
And "Rhuubarbidoo" is just sonically interesting.

Steaaak!

I haven't seen the movie yet but the soundtrack is a masterpiece. Mr. Oizo never ceases to impress. He has truly outdone himself with the release of Steak.

Below are some of my favorites from the Soundtrack. The "Rock It" samples in "Plug It" were a nice touch.

Jackson & his Computer Band

It could be considered a daunting task to remix one of the largest dance singles of the year, especially one that has been whored around to just about every likely remixer in the "Trend Circuit".

To his credit, Jackson isn't as concerned with making you dance as every other 'Year 2000' Blogger-DJ is. Thus, he delivers the most thought out, unique and consequentially epic remix of Justice's single yet.

The Tuss

I've been waiting for the new Tuss EP for quite some time. For those not familiar with The Tuss you may recognize one of his other monikers: Karen Tregaskin, Brian Tregaskin, Aphex Twin, Richard D James etc.

Justice + Justin Timberlake

A well paced remix by Justice. I like this one. I also included one of my favorite tracks from their album.

As valient an effort they put forth to break into the American mainstream, I just don't think Justice has what it takes to do what Daft Punk did. Mp3's are below.

Tortoise

Tortoise was easily one of the best shows this year. Above is a video of their encore 'seneca'... watch the end for flawless white person synchronicity. (fourtet's set was enjoyable as well)
