James Brown is dead

It's a heavy week but the tributes have been amazing. KCRW (in LA) had the gnarliest JB megamix and I'd love to hear more if anyone's got them.

In honor of a great man passing, here's "World (parts 1&2)" -his vision for a better world. It's one of his finest recordings and it was only released on vinyl.

The Disintegration of the Vinyl Industry Continues

This shit is unreal. After more than 30 years in business, "Beanos", Europe's biggest second-hand record shop, home of the largest collection of seven-inch vinyl singles in the world, closes down.

This, of course, all falls in line with the great prophecy of David Bowie, who wrote in 2002.."'The absolute transformation of everything we ever thought about music will take place within 10 years, and nothing is going to be able to stop it. I see absolutely no point in pretending that it's not going to happen. I'm fully confident that copyright, for instance, will no longer exist in 10 years, and authorship and intellectual property is in for such a bashing. Music, itself, is going to become like running water or electricity..."

    Bibio / Artist Valley Records

Bibio is the music and films of Stephen Wilkinson. This guy is seriously one of my fave musicians in the world. Bibio takes the psychedelic melodies and feel of Boards of Canada and takes it back 30 years. Most songs are guitar based with extra elements added in and all recorded to tape. His super 8 films look to be promising and I am looking forward to seeing them all put together. Marcus Eoin of Boards of Canada described Bibio as "the antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music" .

Also worth mentioning is the label that Bibio and his friends started called "Artist Valley Records" . What I have heard on the myspace sounds very promising. Everything is very soulful and has this certain peaceful nature to it. And of course the lofi feel gives it a warmth not found in digital music.

Heres a track from his 2006 album "Hand Cranked"

    Passion Boys

All right, indulge me for a second. If I had to take a shot in the dark on what the next 2 years for the Passion Boys look like, I'd say..... they get inked to Modular. Modular locks down a "Passion Boys Profile Feature" on the myspace front page. They release a 4 track EP with remixes by Van She and Cut Copy. Their new, vertically integrated manager puts together a small US tour sponsored by Fader/Turntablelab. "Pop Rock" gets licenced for a 20 second nissan commercial, running prime time, being marketed to the 30-20 year old demo. Passion Boys blow like Mickey Av. Blogs like Discobelle and StereoGum start featuring their tracks regularly. Diplo does a Passion Boys / Baltimore / Baile Funk / Chicken Noodle Soup / Mash Up. Kids like us live to tell the story. (classic case of "it's funny cause it's true")

At least you heard it here first before it's cool to tell cats it's played out.

The Passion Boys may very well be the tongue in Chromeo's cheek.

    Long live Pop.

    320 kbps... yes, we comes.

  • Shame on you.

    45:33 gets you runnin' yo!
Seriously, it does. I wasn't too happy about Mr. Murphy striking a deal with one of the world's largest companies, but hey, it happens. And when it happens, it can sometimes be a terrible idea, but luckily for DFA Records it wasn't. James Murphy, as everyone knows, fronts his super disco dance group LCD Soundsystem. They put together roughly 45 minutes of music to warm you up and cool you down while you exercise. The track itself is a seamless mix of some pretty unique stuff. Having already gotten my greasy hands on the LCD album (out Feb 2007), I quickly recognized the instrumental to one of the tracks off the album. Besides that, I'd say it's definitely a good listen, be it driving around, cleaning your house, or an alternate method to your workout...

It's an iTunes exclusive track of course, but hey, this a music blog so I have a nice quality rip from a promo I got in the mail for you.

Also, your boy Timberlake got remixed by James as well. Personally I think Timbo's beat is way better but DFA's remixes are usually consistent when it comes to their sound. So yeah, cop that remix also.

    Jimmy Douglas

Jimmy D is a legend. He has been producing, engineering and Mixing down Albums since the Funk era. He has worked with everyone from Aretha Franklin, to Hall & Oates, to Timbaland, to the Rapture. Posted is an exclusive Lecture / Interview Jimmy conducted at The Red Bull Music Academy. I am sure all of our musically inclined patrons will find his commentary thoroughly interesting as this interview serves to further perpetuate the the notion that digital recording is in fact, sonically less appealing then analog (even though Jimmy no longer bounces to tape and refers to himself as "HI-FI").

    120 Days + Lansing-Dreiden

Save for that wack british rapper, Vice has excellent taste. Their latest signing fits snuggly into a Post Electro Space Punk classifcation. (god loves to label) 120 Days is the first Norwegian band ever to be signed directly to a US label. And when potential remix bands came up for the lead single... enter the LD collective. In the remix, Lansing-Dreiden restructure the movement of the track into a more captivating and dynamic ride (where as the original is much more of an epic shoegazer affair). MP3s are posted and click on the pic for a vid of 120 Days performing 'come out' live.

    Timbaland

Well, here's another Timbaland track that is going to be huge. Young Jeezy MCing. Classic Timbaland mouth percussion accompaniment. The synth line comes in at 38 sec and the mood spreads like a tub of artifical butter. Third verse, the beat empties out...enter the sub kicks.

2006 was a huge year for Timbaland and with his solo album dropping in early 07 there is no end in sight. (click the pic for a nice little vid of timbo in the studio with busta)
